Meet Eileen Doyle, a dedicated ISS Catering Supervisor with an exceptional 34-year tenure at Eastern Health. This includes 25 years working with ISS as Eastern Health’s facility services provider. Eileen’s steadfast commitment to excellence and innovation in healthcare catering has made her an invaluable asset to both her team and the patients she serves.

Eileen's extensive experience and compassionate approach reflect ISS’ core values, to ensure that every meal meets the highest standards of quality and care. Here, she talks about her role and her outlook for healthcare catering service innovation in the future.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Every day in healthcare is different, filled with unpredictable challenges and tasks. As an ISS Catering Supervisor, my responsibilities range from covering shifts and preparing food trolleys to ensuring meals meet dietary needs and addressing staff concerns promptly. I also make sure all cleaning and sanitation procedures are followed and documented meticulously.

How has your role changed over the past 34 years?

My role has evolved significantly. Initially, our food guidance relied heavily on FSANZ standards, later incorporating HACCP principles. Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in food intolerances and allergies, requiring greater attention to food safety and dietary customisation.

What challenges do you face when ensuring food safety?

Staying updated on the numerous changes in the food industry is a constant challenge. It’s vital to ensure staff are well-informed about current food safety practices and understand the potential consequences of non-compliance. 

How do you stay updated with food safety regulations and nutritional guidelines?

We stay informed through regular toolbox talks, LMS training, and our newly implemented digital team boards. We also encourage asking questions, no matter how trivial they may seem.

What do you enjoy most about your job after 34 years of service?

I appreciate the diversity of people at Box Hill, each with their own unique story, background, and cultural heritage. Many staff members have been at Box Hill for 15 years or even longer, which reflects the strong culture of belonging and camaraderie at ISS.

Staff members have expressed appreciation for the mentoring and support I have provided them over the years. I believe that creating a positive work environment for my team leads to their happiness, which ultimately results in improved outcomes for ISS.

Any memorable experiences at ISS as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of service excellence at Eastern Health?

Celebrating ISS’ 25th anniversary at Eastern Health fills me with pride – witnessing our continuous improvement and innovation in catering services, to ensure patients receive nutritious and satisfying meals tailored to their dietary needs. This includes initiatives like:

  • Introducing Torus Pak à la carte menus for maternity and mental health wards.
  • Catering equipment upgrades.
  • Encouraging a culture of teamwork and dedication among our staff.

Looking ahead, I am assured that ISS is aligning with the evolving service trends in healthcare innovation. I foresee:

  • A shift to increased customisation and inclusivity, with more personalised meal options tailored to patient needs.
  • Potential adoption of a room service-style approach, improving the overall patient dining experience. This approach would enhance patient satisfaction by providing more control over dining choices and provide a more fulfilling experience for customers and staff members.
  • An increased focus on sustainability, reducing waste and adopting eco-friendly practices. At Box Hill Hospital, we have already implemented successful waste management projects.

I am confident that ISS will continue to lead in delivering exceptional, sustainable catering services, adapting to the changing landscape of healthcare while upholding our commitment to excellence and innovation.
