ISS & Winnow Win Food Waste Prevention Waste2Zero Award

Hosted by Footprint Media Group, the Waste2Zero Awards took place virtually in March 2021 and celebrated excellence in Waste Management and Prevention, providing the waste industry with a platform for sharing best practice and initiatives.
The award highlighted ISS’ partnership with Winnow at a key client site; a leading professional services company based in London where ISS provides food services.
Award-winning waste solution
In 2019, ISS enlisted the support of Winnow Solutions to achieve an intelligent and sustainable restaurant service and experience. ISS were early adopters of ‘Winnow Vision’, a new tool which allows kitchens to automatically track food waste. It uses computer vision and machine learning to help chefs pinpoint waste, cut food costs and save time.
At the client site, initial reports showed the Food Services team were already running a lean operation, with lower levels of waste than other comparable settings. Despite this, they were eager to drive more impactful results, setting themselves the ambitious target of a 50% reduction for the year.
By using data to be smarter with production planning and engaging a group of ‘waste champions’ to maintain momentum, the team were able to cut waste levels by over 50%. In total, 17.9 tonnes of food waste were prevented per year, the equivalent of over 44,000 meals.
Stephen Jenkins, ISS Sector Director, Business & Industry said: “We’re delighted to have won this award in partnership with Winnow Solutions. The success of this project was very much down to the team on site and network of waste champions, who fully embraced Winnow Vision and embedded it within their daily operations. The impressive results demonstrate the vital role cultural change plays in effecting impactful environmental outcomes.”
