Challenge

Our client, a large higher and further education college, wanted to find new ways to increase the efficiency of its specialist cleaning.

As cleanliness continues to be a top priority, the challenge was to maintain the highest possible cleaning standards without sacrificing productivity. We needed to work with our client to test out innovative ways of working, such as the use of collaborative robots—or cobots—to work alongside ISS placemakers.

Solution

ISS introduced six self-mapping cobots that could be used in several areas of the college, to take on repetitive and physically demanding tasks. This allowed the 70 placemakers on the cleaning and facilities management contract to focus on the high-value duties.  

Before starting to work alongside the cobots, staff benefitted from an interactive and detailed training programme—and the supplier stayed in touch in the early stages to provide ongoing client support for the new technology.

Result

Placemakers quickly became confident in operating the cobots, recognising the important role that the technology could play in assisting with daily cleaning schedules. The cobots have reduced time spent on many labour-intensive manual tasks, and allowed the team to focus on touch points and value-add work. 

Data capture technology has supplied proof of presence and measured productivity—and we believe the cobots have delivered great value to our client, taking on physically challenging tasks and providing a consistent clean.

The robotic cleaning market has changed considerably over the last two years, and there is potential for greater efficiencies and cost savings. Increased availability of cobots that are easy-to-use and able to self-programme has made the technology a more viable option for clients.
