Reflecting on her early career Gülfem says:
“Coming from an engineering background, I was used to working with machines and processes. But at ISS, on the Global Management Trainee programme, I discovered my passion for working with diverse teams. This taught me patience and the importance of understanding different perspectives. This was a turning point - I realised I wanted to lead, not just as an engineer but as a manager who can inspire and motivate.”
One of the most pivotal moments in Gülfem’s career was her decision to embrace a role in ISS’s healthcare segment, a challenging but rewarding sector with significant growth potential in Turkey. This move was not without its difficulties, especially as it required her to spend three months in London, away from her family. Yet, Gülfem’s commitment to her career and her drive to make a difference kept her focused:
“Leaving my husband for those three months was tough, but we both knew it was a necessary step for my growth. Balancing work and family is never easy, but I made it a point to be present on weekends, no matter how hectic the week was. It was a promise to myself and my family.”
Gülfem also emphasises the importance of continuous learning and curiosity in her career advancement:
“I am naturally curious and can’t sit idle when something needs to be done. This curiosity has driven me to learn beyond my immediate responsibilities and to find solutions, even when it’s challenging. I believe that being curious and never giving up are key to success.”
"I remember a time when I managed the transition for the opening of a new large hospital, which involved cleaning highly specialised areas with strict waste management regulations and laundry services - both of which were new to us. The pressure to get everything right was high, and time was short. As a team, we had to adapt quickly, coordinate carefully, and work together. In the end, we succeeded."
Reflecting on what motivates her to come to work every day, Gülfem says:
“Leading a team is one of my greatest motivations. I wake up every day with a sense of responsibility - not just to ISS, but to my team. It’s important to me that they come to work happy and motivated, because when they are, we can achieve anything together. Being a good leader to me, means having a good team, knowing that everything still runs smoothly even when I’m not there.”
Gülfem takes much inspiration from her husband:
“He has always been my biggest supporter, ever since I was working on my master’s degree. In moments when I was exhausted and ready to give up, he was the one who believed in me, pushing me to keep going. He often sees potential in me that I struggle to see in myself.”
Gülfem’s journey is a testament to the power of curiosity, perseverance, and leadership. Her story continues to inspire those around her, showing that with determination, anything is possible.
